Double Layers Extrusion Coating Machine

The coating is a crucial step in the extrusion process, and can determine both film quality and final product cost. However, there are many factors that can influence the coating, including slurry systems, coating parameters, and drying conditions. These variables can all affect the resulting coating thickness and product performance.

In this study, the effects of TEC and PEG on the processing and mechanical properties of PHBV processed via extrusion coating onto a paper substrate were investigated. The results show that the addition of plasticisers reduces the crystallinity of PHBV, which increases its flexibility (shown by reduced elastic modulus and tensile strength and increased elongation at break). The bonding strength between plasticised PHBV and the paper substrate is sufficient, even in the presence of high concentrations of TEC and PEG.

The surface structures of the PHBV layers coated with different amounts of TEC and PEG were characterised by AFM and polarisation microscopy. The results show that the surfaces of PHBV films with higher TEC and PEG concentrations have smoother surface structures. This is probably due to the plasticisation effect, which leads to a reduction of defects on the surface of the film. In contrast to the assumption by Rodrigues, the polarisation microscopy results show that a lower plasticiser concentration leads to larger spherulites.
